Low Power - Fiat Punto

Hey up

Just looking for some advice with my car, if anyone could help please?

Yesterday while driving it, I suddenly lost a lot of power. While idoling the engine was spluttering and shaking quite aggressively, but with a few revs it sounded normal. I managed to drive it home as I was only about ten minutes away, but I wouldn't have wanted to go any further to be honest. Up hill was particularly bad, really struggling for power and I thought it might stall once or twice. Oddly though there was a few occasions where it seemed to jump back into life and drive normally.

An engine light has now come on, not too sure what it means though. I can't see a way to upload pictures here, but you can see it at this imgur link:

I left it overnight for the engine to cool down and have tried starting it today, and despite a short splutter at first it actually sounded fine. The only difference is the rev counter was idoling higher than usual, normally it sits just under 10, now it's just over. I'm a bit unsure whether to take it for a short test drive, or whether I could be doing more damage?

I've spoken to some friends and family, and I've had suggestions that the fuel pump may be faulty, the "coil" has gone, or that it could be an "inline filter" into the fuel pump clogged up. Does anyone have any ideas? I have some friends who could help me fit certain parts, but anything complicated I'll just have to take it to a garage, which I'm hoping to avoid.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks
