This is just a topic out of interest to see what others think. I have passed my test in 2007 and just waiting to get my licence back after a head injury. Back when I was learning to drive I had 4 different instructors all the first 3 taught me when coming to a junction or roundabout to put clutch down getting ready to stop and select appropriate gear and stop or carry on depending if it was safe. Well the first instructor learnt me this way and the next 2 didn't mention it. Then a week or so before my final test my instructor had few personal problems so had to put me with another instructor. This other instructor who I had to stay with until after my test as it was too late to cancel test and no other instructor would take someone new on so close to test was so negative. He insisted I was coming up to junctions the wrong way. He said I should of been going into first gear earlier and lifting clutch back up and looking to keep going then if it wasn't safe to keep going it felt I had to rush getting clutch down again to stop. This instructor insisted the way he said was right and the other way pressing clutch slightly later and deciding weather to stop or keep going then lifting it was wrong. Having to do it this different way led to me making more mistakes including stopping too far out at a junction. Luckily it was too late to cancel my test as he insisted I had no chance at all of passing as I was no where near test standard. Actually the day he said this was the last day I could of canceled but didn't tell him that. I was still talking to the instructor who couldn't take me for the test and told him about this new way to do junctions and he said he tried it and couldn't do it properly. He told me on the test to just do junctions how I was used to. Well on the test I did do junctions how I was used to and passed.
I've recently had to have some refresher lessons to get through an assessment and the instructor I had for them didn't comment on how I drove and on assessment they said they wasn't bothered how I did things as long as I did them safely. So I'm wondering how people here drive coming up to junctions or roundabouts. Do you
1) slow down put clutch down ready to stop if you need to or
2) select first gear lift clutch and check if you can keep going then if you have to stop put clutch back down and stop.
To me the 2nd 1 seems to be more wear on clutch as if you do have to stop you are put cluch down twice rather than once.
