Hi
Last summer I noticed a bad misfire on my 2005 1.6 Ti-VCT Ford Focus Zetec.
Changed the plugs, plug leads and coil and the misfire was solved.
But I noticed starting the car was not as smooth as before (when cold used to start first time, now starts 2nd or 3rd attempt with a jolt coming from the engine) plus there is a slight misfire under heavy load.
Tried swapping in / out the old parts to see which original part was faulty. Discovered it was the coil that was the original fault. So I put the original plugs & leads back in to see if it was the new coil that was causing the starting / slight misfire. Returning the old plugs & leads did not solve the problem. So I bought a new coil (Lucas this time) but it didn't solve it.
Unfortunately all the swapping broke the corroded coil plug wires and had to fit a replacement from Simtec. Still no joy. So at this point took it to my mechanic who couldn't find any diagnostic errors but suggested I have the timing belt changed as it was 10K over. Timing belt was changed and still no joy. Mechanic had no other ideas.
I have heard faulty coils can cause ecu issues & non genuine ford coils can have problems. Any suggestions as to what to do? Are after market coils so bad? Should I buy a ford one (I've heard they are £100+). Would a trip to a specialist be worth it? Would they be able to tell where the issue lies? If so is there one anyone can recommend in Cheshire? Or should i just keep driving it until the problem gets so bad it breakdown or I get a fault logged?
Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.
Cheers
Matt
