Reversing collisions

My friend was driving her Hyundai van through Plymouth when she missed her turning by a few yards. She checked her mirrors, put the van in reverse, checked her mirrors again and started to slowly reverse. More or less straight away she hit an 03 plate mini. She is adamant that she could not see him in her mirrors. Both parties agreed it was a less than walking pace collision. There are no marks on either vehicle. The mini driver pointed out that his front bumper now appeared to be 2-3 millimetres out of line(15 years old and several owners) and is insisting she was responsible for this.
She is claiming he must have been very close to her van for her not to be able to see him and believes it was a good 5 seconds or more between engaging reverse and actually manoeuvring. He didn't sound his horn or attempt to manoeuvre himself.
Any thoughts please
