This morning, walking with my wife along the main road of our small town, we had cause to cross an adjoining side road. waiting to give adequate warning of our intention, I started to cross, an approaching woman driver intending to turn left into the road having more than ample time to give way to us. As this car turned into the side road I had to leap backwards to avoid her hitting me - she did stop but not before she passed the spot where I had started to cross. I shouted to her that she should have stopped, getting from her only a look of dumb annoyance.
I think it is about time the government regularly interrupted all UK TV programmes with short ads of various (apparently obscure) finer points in law, to ram home the failings of drivers.
It might also be a good idea if the councils had traffic wardens canvassing car parks and sticking appropriate leaflets under windscreens, because it is obvious that many drivers are ignorant of this law.
H.C. Rules for Pedestrians (1 to 35)
When crossing the road, look out for traffic turning into the road, especially from behind you. If you have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, you have priority and they should give way (see Rule 170).
Rule 170
watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way.
