09-plate VW Touran. Sometime around a year ago, I noticed that a metallic rattle occurred when travelling over an uneven road surface. Classic example are the rumble strips that span a carriageway. I have removed everything from the car that could be loose and still this rattle occurs. Thinking it might be something like the exhaust system, I had them check out the car when it went in for service, but nothing untoward could be found.
I have now done another round of checking, and have come to a conclusion that it COULD be the tailgate latch. Close examination does indicate some slight surface deformation in the outer face of the pillar which holds the claw when the tailgate is closed. This face appears to be a bush which can rotate on the holding pillar.
I am wondering if anyone else has come across a similar problem, perhaps even on a VW Touran?
If there is any possibility of 'play' at this point, I can imagine downward forces on a rough road being able to cause the latch to "chatter". Comments appreciated, Snowball.
