starter problem rover 216

hi my friend has got rover 216 the starter motor broke so i fitted a second hand one yesterday we tryed to start the car it clicked once and no noise since i have cleaned the connectors to the battery and to the starter and the earth strap to the top bolt n still nothing
has the removal of the battery code blocked it as he has never used the key fob that came with the car
