Tracing Which Vehicle with Engine Number

Can anyone help please

my alternator has broken on my van so I bought one to replace it but we found that the alternator I bought did not fit the engine as when I bought the van it had had a reconditioned engine put in, my question is how can I found out what vehicle the engine came off from the engine number as I have been on the internet all day trying to find this out with out any success.
