Citroen C3 SX 2005 Whirling Noise when going around 2.5k revs

Evening all,

So recently I have noticed (probably because I drove home late one night with the car stereo off) that my Citroen C3 SX 2005 1.4 Petrol (68,000 miles - no cam belt change) car makes a whirling noise noticable in 3rd gear when going around 2 to 2.5k revs. If I put the car into 4th (which decreases the revs) the noise stops and if I put my foot on the clutch whilst in 3rd it stops completely but then comes back when i take my foot off the clutch. If I put the car into 5th gear and go around 2.5k revs you cant really hear the whirling but then you have road noise which probably muffles the belt whilrling noise described below.

I get no warning lights and the car is running fine, no noticable lags or tension in steering.

From reading online a lot of people with similar faults have suggested Alternator, having no knowlege of cars, other than what colour it is and when I turn the key it starts, I wanted to get other peoples opinion before taking it to a garage.

I would leave it as it is as I seem to have no visual symptoms of it doing anything to the car, however, I have sold it to the mother and would rather get it checked out before actually giving it to her.

The sound seems to be coming from the drivers side engine bay and is sometimes quiet when in 3rd, other times loudish. It sounds almost like a belt whirling around (i imagine its what a belt on a mechanical system would sound like if it was working quite hard)...

I have no idea if this has only just happened or whether it has always done this and i have never noticed as ive always had the radio on around 3rd gear...I also dont know if im now just imagining it and its a normal sound for the car itself! I had my brother sit in the car with me and he seems to think its normal but having sat in my new van Ive bought it doesnt make that sound so?!

But since its completely quiet when i press the clutch im assuming something needs replacing to do with something engaging when the clutch isnt pressed.

Any help would be appreciated, other than getting a mechanic to sit in the car with me and see if im just being an idiot (which ill get charged for....mybe i deserve it haha!) I dont really know what to do.

Thankyou in advance,

Clare
