Crit'Air - clean air stickers

This RAC website "Crit'Air clean air stickers - need to know for driving in France" warns UK drivers of a risk of on-the-spot fines if not displaying a sticker when driving in France.
I picked up this piece of information for a caravan and camping site forum, and from the RAC's own webpage.
Studying the English translation of the Crit'Air ruling - https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/ - there is a section for vehicles registered abroad. Nowhere does it actually state that obtaining and displaying the certificate applies to vehicles of foreign visitors (i.e., British drivers). It possibly refers to vehicles that were registered in another country and brought into France by persons domiciled in France.

I have not found any advice in the media about this and, come Monday, I will be contacting my Club (CMC) for advice.
The RAC webpage does "advise" drivers to get this sticker, but does not mention any compulsory requirement, which I find odd. Can it be a similar farce to that of two or three years ago, when we were all told of the need to affix speed limit stickers to our caravans/motorhomes, only to discover later that it did not apply to UK visitors?
