Diesel emmissions.

This week, went into town on the bus - our bus service is Arriva. During the journey, at one point we were following another Arriva bus in front of us. On the rear panel, instead of the usual advert, it said "Modern diesel buses are less polluting than modern diesel cars."
The logic of a bus having a more powerful engine and doing considerably less mpg (frequent stopping and much low gear work), I am puzzled as to how this claim can be true.
Whatever later improvements in technology have been made, the basics of a diesel engine are similar for cars and commercial vehicles, so any advances on buses relevant to emission control would automatically apply to cars - and probably be enforced by legislation.
