Brought my car over from Ireland - cover note elapsed!

Hello all!

I've been having a right drama. I've brought my car over from Republic of Ireland and got insurance based on the VIN. I then proceeded to make many mistakes. Now the insurance policy has been cancelled as 30 days are up, as I did not supply a UK registration plate number from DVLA in time...

It's my fault, and I'm going to post up these mistakes in order for others to learn from them!

1) If you car is over 10 years old, it does not require Type Approval, and therefore sending off for a Certificate of Conformity from your
car manufacturer is a waste of time and money. This isn't too clear from some sets of instructions I found online. DVLA didn't point it out either until a second phone call - too late, sadly. I had waited for mine to arrive before asking DVLA what I need to do with it.
2) You will need your Irish Vehicle Registration documentation for your MOT. They insisted on a Certificate of Conformity too in one particular franchise - I found another garage that did not require it though!

My cover note has elapsed, and now my insurance quotes from other companies are insanely high, as my policy was cancelled by my Insurer (although they were at lengths to point out that this was not due to misrepresentation on my part). Is there any way around my mess?
