Renault Clio - Squealing noise

Hi everyone,

Car details:

Renault Clio 2002 16v 1.4 automatic.

A couple of days ago a squealing noise started coming from the bonnet area. It's started to get louder. I opened the bonnet and listened in and just assumed it was the timing belt. I drove to a friend of a friends garage who had a look, sprayed some liquid onto the timing belt which made no difference. He said that if it was the timing belt, it would have made a difference to the sound and very likely stopped. He suggested he is worried it could be something to do with the cam/timing belt. I had the cam/timing belt and water pump replaced in March 2014 and since then have only drove around 10,000 miles. I have the car booked in for Tuesday, but he advised me it is best not to drive just incase it is the timing belt.

So, any ideas what it could be? Surely a timing belt that is only 2 years only with low mileage can't be failing already? Maybe I am being cynical but I wondering if he could tell I have no clue about cars and is trying to fob me off? It's massively inconvenient for me to not be able to drive my car for the next 4 days, but I guess I will have to make do.

Sometimes when I accelerate the noise stops, but generally it is always there, whether moving at speed or idle. I have noticed once or twice that there has been a jump between gears that have been quoted jolted, but I may only be noticing this as I am now being extra sensitive over every noise / movement.

Any help? Thanks.
