Rod through engine

I had a catastrophic engine failure at the weekend. Basically driving down the M62 and the oil pressure light came on, smoke poured out the back, loud knocking noise and no response from engine. Managed to pull over and dodge a lorry and when I pulled on the hard shoulder it basically pee'd out oil. I have found a hole in the engine and basically a rod poking through it (not sure from what) so I know the engine is screwed. However I am confused about how this might have happened.. The car is serviced regularly, it had some work done (timing chain, new oil and cleaned out) last year and a few months after, a full service. There's was no noise coming from the engine before this happened and the oil was checked and topped up in the morning, using the correct oil ( I am very conscious of the oil levels in the car before anyone suggests that I haven't put oil in it!) Basically there was no warning/problems before this. The car is 57 plate corsa with 72,000 miles on the clock and has had a full service history and is well maintained so it came as a bit of a shock for this to happen.. Any advice on how it might have happened would be great.
