CAT C Status is wrong.... I'm fairly sure!!

My girlfriend recently bought a W reg Polo TDI from my Dad who is a mechanic and after taxing the car a letter arrived from DVLA saying the Polo needed a V.I.C due to it being 'accident damaged'.

Now my Dad had serviced the car since 2008 and it was news to him about the CAT C status. He bought it from an elderly lady who was giving up driving and donating the proceeds to charity. She had owned it from new and had the original sales invoice. My Dad visited her to ask about the insurance issue and she said that it had never been in an accident apart from a minor graze on the wing (which is still there).

My Dad has been in the motor trade for 47 years and cannot see why this car is a CAT C. I know there are many reasons why it could have achieved this status but there are absolutely no clues.

Apparently there is no explanation on the insurance database to account for the CAT C status. I feel that the Polo has been incorrectly registered as accident damaged but how do I prove it either way?

Any help much appreciated!
