Hello,
So I took my 2001 Fiat Punto 1.2 8v into a garage today to have a back box fitted. This morning I noticed a water leak from what looked like the water pump area. I told the mechanic that I believe the water pump had gone, he got it up on the ramps and confirmed it was dead. I agreed to have the water pump, timing belt and tensioner replaced with new coolant and while he was at it an oil change. Total cost £265.
Upon returning to the garage I went and paid for the work and left to drive home. I started the car and plumes of smoke came out of the exhaust and the car started to shake violently. Went straight back into the garage and the guy show the smoke and smelt it and diagnosed a head gasket failure.
I questioned why this hasn't been pick up when doing the other work and he said it wouldn't have been obvious as he wasn't looking for it and quoted another £300 for the head gasket work.
Is he taking me for a mug or could this be the case. Is there anything I can do to dispute these repairs? I paid by credit card so know that I can recall the payment made but what are the implications to doing this?
My main issue is why do the work costing nearly £300 when he must have know that the head gasket had gone and would need further money throwing at a 15 year old car.
Any help or advice Micky appreciated
