finance assitance

Hello there people, I am wondering whether any body can assist me with a problem in relation to vehicle finance, here is the scenario in full:-

I purchased a different vehicle from my local dealer and part-exed my existing car, to which the dealer offered to pay off the outstanding finance on the vehicle and to refinance the new vehicle; a deal was done and I agreed to return in 2 days when the pre sale preparation had been done on the new vehicle; upon returning to pick the vehicle up I was informed there was a problem, in that the dealer had no V5 for the vehicle, which meant that I couldn't tax same, so I agreed to wait until he had received a replacement from DVLA - some 5 weeks later (bearing in mind the dealer had been paid by the finance company some 1 day after signing the credit agreement) I received a telephone call from the dealer stating that he had now received the V5 and that I could collect the vehicle; so I drove my existing vehicle, the one the dealer had taken in part exchange, to the dealers and swapped the vehicles over; unfortunately, due to intermittent use of same in the previous 5 weeks, the battery had gone somewhat flat, necessitating jump starting the vehicle and upon dropping the vehicle off I informed the dealer of this and he did not appear concerned - last week I received a telephone call from the finance company of the vehicle I had part-exed stating that I had missed a payment, I informed him that I had part-exed the vehicle with a dealer and that the dealer should have paid the finance off; he stated that he would contact the dealer and get back to me; on speaking to him later he informed me that the dealer was refusing to pay the finance off as the vehicle I had part-exed would not run and was of no use to him and he advised me to speak to the dealer direct - this I did, with the dealer spinning a yarn that the first time they had seen my vehicle was when I brought it down to exchange same, that I had taken it in to the garage next door to the dealers in December and that they had determined that it had a serious fault and intimating that I had freewheeled the vehicle to the garage and just parked it up, al of which are complete fabrications of the truth, he further informed me that he had no use for the vehicle and that he wouldn't be paying the existing finance off - I have a sales invoice from the garage detailing that they took the vehicle in part-ex and as to the amount agreed and also the partner in the business completed and signed the bottom of the V5, transferring ownership of same to the dealer.
Where do I stand, legally, in this matter as I cannot afford 2 lots of finance; any assistance will be most gratefully received.
