Breakdown and Now a Problem with RAC approved Garage

Hi we own a Vauxhall Zafira 2.2 Petrol (it has been recalled due to the Fire problems and Vauxhall did what they needed to do).

on the 2nd January the car just stopped suddenly, no over heating, no water or oil anywhere just stopped. RAC came and highly recommended that they tow us to their RAC approved repairer which happended to be only a mile away and not far from where we live.

After a few days the Garage advised that they believe the problem is the head gasket and it would cost £180 inc VAT for them to properly investigate. Having agreed this a few days later they advised the vehicle needed a new head gasket and the cost would be £840 inc VAT and they would not charge the £180, therefore not leaving us much option to agree the work. Knowing that the value of the car was not much more than this we did make a couple of enquiries however by the time another garage could have collected the car and we would have to pay the £180 to the original garage we agreed for the works to proceed at £840 inc VAT.

2 weeks later and after chasing many times and having all messages, emails and even facebook messages ignored they said that the head gasket is done but the car now needs a new petrol injector. I was told there was no additional cost for this. A few days later I was then told the Petrol Injector has been changed but the car is still misfiring.

Today I have been told there is a problem with the ECU which was probably the original cause of the head gasket going and they need longer to find out the problem.

In view of the poor service I have received I have reported to both RAC and Motor Codes who have both said it is not their problem.

Where do I stand please if they now come back and say its going to cost more to replace the ECU. I was told it was £840 inc VAT to repair the car, now surely they cannot now add to the price. what happens if they change the ECU and then find someing else wrong it could go on forever.

Also if they cannot repair do I still have to pay the £840.00, it would be better for me to walk away leave them the car and get a new one?

Any help would be appreciated, useful comments only though please.
