2006 Renault Clio Campus - Engine not idling

Hi,

Recently I've been having trouble with my Renault Clio Campus (1.2 litre petrol, 56 plate) not returning to idle revs once the clutch is engaged. I will come to a stop and engage the clutch (i.e stopping in traffic) and the revs will remain at around 2,500 rpm (sometimes higher). This then causes issues puling away, often requiring some over-revving to keep the engine alive.

It also happens whilst driving at higher speeds and is noticeable between gear changes. Whilst travelling at around 40-60 mph, I have been able to leave it in gear and come off the accelerator and the car has then continued to pull at around 2,500 rpm (as if on cruise control). Additionally when changing up a gear, I often experience a jerking motion after engaging the gear, releasing the clutch and pressing the accelerator up to and beyond the amount required to match the current revs.

It happens irregularly, mostly once or twice per journey, and has no preference to when in the journey it occurs (i've experienced it both immediately on a cold start and with it first occurring after 45 mins of driving). It normally doesn't occur for very long either, a few gentle gear changes later and the problem has usually rectified itself but I am experiencing this more and more each day.

I am also currently experiencing increasing amounts of clutch slip. Firstly this was just under higher demand from pulling up hills but now will slip in almost every gear in response to slightly harsher acceleration, so I am planning to have this replaced within the next week or so (which is to be expected at 85,000 miles I imagine!).

I was wondering if anyone had experienced this sort of issue before, and if there was any advice available? Also, are the two issues (i.e idling and clutch slip) likely to be related, whereby a replacement clutch may remedy both?

I sadly don't have much mechanical knowledge and couldn't find a related thread (apologies for the essay), so I thought I'd try here before the local mechanic helps himself to the contents of my wallet! Thanks in advance!
