Car stalling on hills

Hello everyone i'm hoping i can get some help off someone who knows what they're doing.

I moved to France yesterday, and came over via the tunnel in a Peugeot 106 on an R plate.

The car ran fine except for some juddering at higher speeds/when bearing right on motorways etc. Was running fine at slower speeds.

Got us here fine. Parked up, emptied our stuff/took the dog for a walk and then went to the supermarket in it, performed equally fine.

Got in tonight to go back to the supermarket and it refused to start, almost like it was trying to start up but spluttering a bit and then giving up. Almost like it was stalling - starting up and revving didn't help it start either.

Got it going, went down the hill towards the bridge at the bottom of our road which has a steep hill coming off it. Went up the hill, car stalled.

Rolled it back down the hill with the engine off and then tried to restart and it wouldn't start up. Again, like it was trying to but then just giving up.

It finally started and i reversed backwards (was in the middle of the road at this point) to try and get out of the way and it was fine until again i came to a slight incline and then it stalled again.

So finally i rolled it forwards into a parked position and just left it there because it wouldn't start back up.

I'm at a loss really - don't speak very good French and am TERRIBLE with cars. I had a car once that stalled at lights because the accelerator cable was loose but that wasn't struggling to start.

Any ideas what it might be/if it's fixable without going to a French mechanic who i'm fairly sure is going to try and rip me off.

The car is only worth £500 so i'd like to know before i spend any money on it what it could possibly be.

Thanks! Hope to get this sorted as we're in the middle of rural France and i'm with a pregnant wife and dog and we don't even have a bank in our town let alone anywhere to buy another car!

Cheers. Phil
