Ford Focus 2002 1.4 petrol - must pump accelerator very fast for 1 minute before it

Hi...

After pumping my 2002 model 1.4 petrol Focus as fast as humanly possible for at least 45 seconds, it will start and idle around 1250 rpm. once warm it drops to around 850 rpm and runs fine for the rest of the day. Next morning, same old story. I paid £60 for a diagnosis at an independant Ford workshop. No definitive response except to suggest changing various sensors which may or may not be the problem.

Could anyone suggest any less expensive, more logical solution.

I don't drive an old car through choice; just simple necessity. To throw money around is not an option I can really pursue.

Additional info:
Ignition on gives a roughly 4 second sound from the fuel pump
New battery installed 3 weeks ago
When driving, the speedo will occasionally stop working and the centre field screen will indicate partial numbers or gobbeldegook (Technical term) by this I mean the odometer etc will show nothing/inverted numbers/partial numbers with various bars that make up the digits missing - I hope this makes sense?

Any help greatly appreciated....
