Hi,
When we bought our vauxhall vivaro van, it came with black alloy wheels on it from the previous owner, with 205/55/16 91W tyres on them. We also got the original wheels with the van, which had 195/65/16C 100/98T tyres on them. We just put the original ones in storage and never thought much of it until now when im looking at replacing the tyres. (Infact this will be the second time, the first time i just asked them to put new tyres on the alloys like for like, so had 205/55/16 put on again.
It meant nothing to me if im honest so did some google searching, figured out that the 205 is the width, the 55 means the profile is 55% of 205, and the 16 is the diameter in inches. (I think thats right?)
Basically im debating whether to stick with the alloys that are on there, and get some new 205/55/16 again, or put the old wheels back on and replace the tyres on those (they all need replacing). The alloys do look nicer of course, maybe thats also to do with the low profile tyres, but someone has suggested to me that the tyre size ive been putting on will wear quicker because its a standard car tyre, not a van tyre.
So, my next thought is, well can i keep the alloys but go back to the original tyre size 195/65/16 and have those put on the alloys instead. And will it give me any benefit doing so.
As far as workloads concerned, its not a work van. We have it for the size in the back and have dog cages fitted in it. So 50% of the time the van is empty with just me driving it to work, and the other 50% of the time its only carrying 3 dogs. BUT, we have a tow bar fitted and a touring caravan so sometimes travel a long distance every month or so. Dont get me wrong we've never had a problem towing with the lower profile tyres, but if theres a benefit to be had in going back to the original tyre size, AND i can keep the alloys on it, i would have to consider doing that.
If anyone could give me any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Im doing some reading and trying to find out too, but sometimes you need someone a bit more in the know.
I went into a small back street tyre unit, he said it wont make any difference and to put some of the 205/55/16 part worns of his on at 25 pound each, but i dont like the idea of part worns anyway and want to double check if theres any benefit to changing the size of the tyre too. Whether or not that means i have to go to the old steel wheels or not i dont know yet.
Thank you
