Some years ago we were getting a local free newspaper (unsolicited) posted through our door. For some time I had already decided not to have newspapers delivered - for two important reasons. They were frequently left sticking out of the letterbox, meaning:
(1) A clear signal, after a couple of days, that the occupants were away - very useful to the low-life crowd.
(2) On rainy days the newspaper became sodden, and produced a capillary action where water dripped into the hall and risking permanent damage to floor covering.
Arriva buses have a free Metro newspaper on board - fine, where it eventually ends up is not a home-owner problem.
But we are now getting a "Mercury Extra" which may arrive on a Thursday or a Friday, from heavens knows where - and, yes, sticking out of the door.
These newspapers could easily be left at bus/train stations or supermarket foyers for people who wish to read them can take one. This paper is largely for advertising, old news that has already been aired in the general media, and is nothing more than a nuisance.
I am now trying to track its source in order to stop its delivery. If unsuccessful, I shall resort to rolling it up, attaching a label saying "Unsolicited mail - return carriage forward to sender" and drop it in the Royal Mail post box. Now, if we all did that...............
