We bought this vehicle two years ago from a vw main dealer.
By the first service seven months later my wife, who is the main driver, had noticed that on a slight hill start,on starting to move ,the vehicle would roll back a litle distance before the gears picked up the drive.this fact was reported to the dealer, but no real comment was made.(apart from to use the handbrake!)the vehicle was serviced at recommended intervals and on notification by the same dealer, until service before last when the mechanic noticed a "slight" oil leak from the gearbox,"but dont worry" was the comment from the dealer.
The car is driven mainly on motorways for my wifes commute and she began,(some three months ago) to notice a frightening problem with the gear box when in stop start traffic the cars gear indicator lights started flashing and it would not move passed first gear.by turning off the ignition for a few seconds and then restarting the problem would disappear, until the next time and the next and the next.the dealer was informed regarding this problem but we were told that with the engine management light not being lit when the vehicle was inspected, there was not a lot they could do.the vehicle was put in for its service last week and lo and behold it needs a complete new gear box.the dealer has supplied the new gearbox at their expense to the tune of £4900 plus vat(their figures!)and we have paid for the labour(£800),
so if you have a golf and it has a "dsg" gearbox beware of this fault ,it seems there was a manufacturers callback within 6 months of our purchase, but it didnt include the uk(seen on internet so not able to confirm)
