I need to buy a practical car, looking to spend 2-3k. My first choice would be a Skoda Octavia, I think I can get an early Mk II with that money. It won't get much use, with most journeys being very short, and I'm aware of the problems with modern diesels. The thing is I really like diesels, I think they're nicer to drive because of all the torque at low revs. Sticking to petrol will limit my choices, especially as I want something with more "guts" than the 1.6. So how mad would I be to go for a diesel? Is it only the newer ones with DPFs that clog up, or is that likely to be a problem with something a bit older too?
I've heard that a lot of people prefer the 1.9 VAG diesel to the newer 2.0. Why is that?
I'd also like to know what else to look out for on the VAG engines (including petrol), make sure I don't buy something that's due for a cambelt change or something like that.
