Focus 1.6 Ti VVT problems

Hi
I have a 2006 Focus 1.6 with the Ti VVT engine fitted that I have recently bought. It has 79,000 miles and no service history. It drove fine and had plenty of power. Only problem was an occasional rattle for a few seconds on startup. I have recently serviced it and used the correct grade of 5W/30 fully synthetic oil. The problem I noticed was that when driving, the temperature gauge hardly moved although it rose to working temperature if I let it sit in traffic. The cooling fan comes on at the right time so it never overheats. Because of that, I removed and inspected the thermostat and found that the thermostat retaining lugs inside the housing had broken so a new one was fitted. The temperature now holds at just below the halfway point when driving.

Now, here's my problem. The car still starts and runs fine UNTIL it reaches working temperature when the power drops off noticeably. If I continue driving for some time after this happens (20-30 minutes), I get the engine warning light come on. I have a code reader and it throws up fault P000A. The message also says something like 'bank 1 camshaft slow response'. I am able to clear the fault but irrespective of the light remaining on, the car will be back to full power after I have switched off and it cools down. Could it be the VCT units(s), the cam sensors, the VCT actuators or the VCT controller or anything else? It's obviously temperature related but has anyone come across this problem before?
