Question about merging from the right lane into left lane.

Hello folks first time poster so I hope you don't mind me starting with a thread I have about a situation today.

Today I turned right onto a road which leads you to a set of lights that has 3 lanes. There are 2 lanes for going straight on and one for turning right. Directly ahead of the lights a short distance after the lights the road merges into a single lane. You can clearly see this from the lights as there are road markings in the form of those arrows you get telling you to merge left. Today I turned onto this road and ended up stuck in the right hand lane on my scooter and was at the front of the queue while waiting at the lights. The road is a 30mph road btw. Anyway when the lights turned green I quickly accelerated to get to 40mph so I can get ahead of the cars in the left hand lane, and I was ahead of the cars in the left hand lane. As I continued across the junction the car in the left hand lane pulled level with me and continued to match my speed. I didn't want to accelerate any more in case the other car also accelerated and I didn't want to brake in case I was hit from behind. Also as the lane I was in was merging very shortly and I couldn't slow down and merge from behind the car in the left as the traffic in the lane in the left wouldn't allow. Bear in mind I was doing 40mph on a 30mph road as was the car in the left and also bear in mind I often on this same junction and have never had any problems before who was in the wrong?
