Help someone crashed into me

Hi everyone, Ive joined today to ask everyone opinion and to see if anyone has had a similar experience.
i was driving today down a local estate when someone ran into the back of me whilst i stopped for oncoming traffic, the driver then got out and told me to get out the car now. obviously i was slightly worried as there was large 3 guys and i was myself!
when i rolled forward out of the way they all jumped back in the car and drove off at speed. straight away i called 999 and gave chase to catch his registration number. I managed to catch it as he made of at high speed, i then stopped and waited for the police to arrive and talked them through the whole situation.

They informed me that they would go to the drivers address.

Tonight I received a call from the local constable saying that she had spoke to the other driver and said there is nothing that she could do as he stated I reversed into him and chased 4 grown men in there 30s, it may be comical but I'm 5'9 and 10 stone hardly a match for broad average built guys guys..

where do i stand?

Wouldn't you have called the police if someone reversed into you and chased you? Police logic says they cant do anything...
