2009 Mitsubishi Lancer diesel probs (has VW diesel engine btw )

Bought the car with 100000 miles on it full service history, decent owner and motorway miles.

Its a diesel (VW sourced 2 ltr diesel probably a PD I think) and he hadn't changed the timing belt.(he thought it was a chain) Doh! Also clutch very high but not "gone" yet.

Anyway. Had the timing belt, water pump and ancillary belt changed. Got the car back and it had a rattle on idle when cold. Ignored for a bit and took a long drive of about 200 miles or so. At the end of that drive it was hilly and windy B roads. Clutch started to slip or so I thought anyway.

Couldn't replicate the clutch slip after that, but seeing as the mileage was so high and car rattling on idle assumed clutch and DMF on way out. Had them changed.

Still rattled after. So back to the timing belt people and sure enough alternator pulley and tensioner on way out, so had them changed.

still rattled .....getting fed up by this point.

And now the drive shaft seal is leaking too. Not changed on the clutch and flywheel change. So getting that sorted too.

and here we are.

I note my air con works, but is low on gas and so the air con compressor clutch clicks more often than it should. However rattle happens irrespective of air con on or off and only when cold. Ive also noticed the car surges a little when not driving it too hard around 2k revs in 3rd/4th. Notice when slowing towards some lights after a long drive last week. Related? unsure.

Ideas appreciated?

Answers on a postcard please. Not the best start to ownership!
