How Would You Choose a Driving Instructor?

I've passed my theory test and I am trying to find a driving instructor now.

I am finding it very overwhelming since there are so many options. People seem to say you should pick one that has been recommended by someone you know. However, I don't know anyone else that has recently learnt to drive. I am nearly 30, so every one I know has either already done it or has no plans to learn.

There are so many instructors! There are more than 50 in my local area alone. Probably hundreds if you look at surrounding areas too. Should I pick a school or an independent? Should I pick an instructor by grade? Does it really matter if they are DIA registered or not?

I have been reading and reading online, but I am not getting to much further with making a decision. Just finding even more schools to choose from.

It's quite intimidating since I can't afford to spend money on the wrong one. I know I shouldn't necessarily pick the cheapest, but I don't want to have to have lessons twice :D

If anyone has any advice or suggestions of what to do in a situation where you don't have any recommendations I would be grateful to hear them :)
