Second hand vehicle burst into flames! I want a refund!

Hi all,

I am looking for some advice. I bought a second hand vehicle from a dealer 3 weeks ago. It came with a new MOT and I have used it lightly since I have had it (about 500 miles). We had a few issues to start with but nothing major, mostly parts missing from the vehicle which the dealer assured us he would replace before delivering it to us, it came with nothing replaced.

Well, on the weekend the engine bay burst into flames when I tried to start it! The cables around the fuse box were completely burned up and melted all over the place before I had time to put the fire out. There is a fair amount of damage, but I have been warned that without thorough and careful repairs, the vehicle may not be safe to drive again. I dread to think what might have happened if the fire had started while on the motorway!

I want the dealer to come and take it away and give me a full refund, failing that, carry out all repairs and pay for an RAC inspection to verify that the vehicle has been repaired and is now safe, although I must admit I have lost all confidence in this vehicle now and would rather not drive it again, the fire really shook me up. Should I contact the dealer first and explain what has happened and what I would like them to do? What is the next step if they refuse?

Thank you in advance.
