I bought an 02 plate Peugot 206 on June 1st from a private seller off gum tree. In the advert it was described as having a few bumps and scratches and when I emailed the guy for more info he admitted the windscreen wipers were operated by a switch and the indicators were broken(dont flick off). when my mums boyfriend spoke to him on the phone he said a new bit for the wipers costs about £18 on ebay.
So I went to view the car and sat in the back while my mums boyfriend test drove it with the guy selling it sat in the passenger seat. It seemed a bit rickety but it had over 110000 miles on it (i was looking for a cheap run around for a few months) so I didn't expect it to be the smoothest drive. At one point when we pulled off from a junction the car started to shake as if about to stall and struggled to move. We asked the seller what was wrong and he said he wasn't sure but all you had to do was turn the wheel slightly.
The seller said that he was previous advertising it on gum tree but took it down because it needed some work as it hadn't been driven for a while. He claimed to have spent over £200 on repairs so he'd obviously had it looked at by a mechanic. I took it to a garage today because the shaking doesn't seem right, thinking it'd be something small, and was told the car would cost about £500 to fix (I paid £360 for it)!! Turns out, the gear box was hanging out the bottom of the car, the clutch is going, the indicators need new stalks which cos about £150 and theres a hole in exhaust.
Now, i know I dont have many rights in this instance but I dont believe the car was 'as described' or roadworthy. The seller told me he was confident it'd pass its next MOT in Setember and when asked what the shaking was he waved it off as something minor - he clearly new there was more wrong with it having just had some work done to it! Also, surely a hole in the exhaust makes the car not road worthy?
Sorry for the massive post, I really want to know where I stand before I give this guy a call. Any advice would be appreciated!!
