Car tax

Hi, I've just bought a 4 year old car, and was told they would put 6 months tax on for me. I was charged for this, but when got home, i realised that the car had 6 months tax left on from the 12 months which had been put on by the previous owner.
Can the car sales charge me for this, or have i been robbed?
