International driving permit and driving in UK

Hi,

I was wondering if somebody could advice on driving in UK with an international driving permit.

I hold an indefinite leave to remain since 2006 and have never actually taken the UK test. I have rented cars several times and the international driving permit I hold from Russia has always been acceptable. I have had the license from 2001.

Recently, my wife and I had a baby, and we have realised how much we need a car. I had previously had a provisional license around 10 years ago and did pass a theory test, but because I was living so close to work, I just never got to the practical test, as it was not urgent and later on forgotten about.

I have today visited a car dealer and tried finding out the answers from them, but they just wanted to sell.

My question is - Am I aloud to drive in UK with an international driving permit whilst I get my full UK license? I know I can insure the vehicle and pay the road tax, but not sure about the driving bit.
