Today In History - 118th anniversary of the first speeding charge

On this day in 1896 Walter Arnold of East Peckham, Kent became the first person in Great Britain to be charged with speeding. He was fined one shilling and costs after a policeman chased him down on a bicycle for travelling at 8mph - 4 x the speed limit for towns.
