Tracing a Replacement Engine

Hi

Can anyone tell me of a system on how to find out any info on an engine using only the engine block number. DVLA can't to it. It doesn't have police history. We desperately need to trace where it came from and also the make and model of the engine. the only thing we know is it is from a scrap dealer.
