Can I purchase car tax with V5 (logbook) after death of owner?

My father passed away at the end of August and as executor his car passed into my responsibility. I've had months to sort it out but have repeatedly put it off as I felt i couldn't face dealing with it. Obviously that's no excuse but that's all I have.

The main issue I have is that the car tax runs out at the end of this month (in 4 days). I initially couldn't find the V5 so sent off the V62 form several weeks ago to change the registered keeper to myself but I am still yet to receive the new V5 in my name. The car is also not insured in my name but currently still under the insurance of my father as they graciously gave me time to try and sort things out.

However, I have now found the previous V5 form with my father's name on and the accompanying 'New Keeper' section. I've scoured the internet to see if I can use this along with my father's insurance and the still valid MOT certificate to tax the car and have found that you can indeed use the V5C/2 section to tax a car but only within the first two months of new ownership.

What I was wondering is, does this still apply when the previous owner passed away instead of selling the car on? Can I still use his insurance (which is still valid) if it's not in my name?

I've tried contacting the DVLA but haven't been able to get through. If you have any input whatsoever I would be truly grateful. I have nowhere to store the car off-road which is why i'm so anxious to get this sorted asap.

Sorting this out has caused me nothing but anxiety, which is 100% my own fault for leaving it so late.
But yes, if anyone could give me any advice?
