Hi car sages,
My car sadly broke down on the way to golf yesterday evening. I managed to park safely on a side road and am now grappling with the logistics of it all.
I want to get peoples thoughts on whether this is a clutch or gearbox issue. I'll try to capture as much info as possible.
While I was driving towards a roundabout I smelt a subtle burning smell and my clutch didn't feel responsive but was still sort of operating. I was able to shift into gear 1 but there was lower power than expected being sent to the wheels and it didn't really take gear 2 well. And as I took the roundabout I could feel what I thought may be a gear slip (the RPMs got quite high). As I coasted into a side road the car felt shaky and there was a slight jerk.
A friend came to help and he drove the car up and down the road. He tried three gears + reverse but commented that the car felt quite off to drive. I couldn't hear any grinding or any unusual sound from the outside. There were no oil/fluid marks on the road etc. He mentioned the clutch felt completely different (having driven the car before) which corroborated with my experience.
The car did have a bearing issue. There was a whirring in low gears and I had noticed in the last few weeks that the car was making a whirring in gear 3 that hadn't been there previously.
I bought the car to drive for a year (as a new driver) and mechanics said it should hold out before i scrap it. Of course, i took the risk but I didn't expect to scrap it so soon. But as i got it for so cheap, it'd be cheaper to change parts than buy another car. Hence i wanted to understand what people may think the issue is.
Would really appreciated your thoughts.
