My wife has just bought a 2002 reg diesel passat, I don't know anymore about it because I am away for work this week, but she says the alarm goes off everytime she locks it. The key fob doesn't work and neither does the central locking on the front passenger door and she has to manually lock the front passenger door. (Central locking wiring problem?)
One person has owned it since it was imported to ROI from NI and he can't drive it anymore due to his age (80+) and it is mechanically 100%.
As we live in the sticks she wants to know if the alarm can be turned off permanently or disabled somehow?
I will know more about the car when I get home sometime next week and update this post.
