yesterday, I realised after 5 miles, that I had misfueled, so stopped immediately-fortunately by a friend's house. Rang the RAC about 1545, was told help was coming.waited and waited. After a couple more calls (during which a young lady informed me that "as it was my fault" I would have to wait as other people were in need after breakdowns--GREAT lesson in Customer relations! BY 1900, I was told that a "local" tow truck (having been told that it could be drained) was on its way. "Local" turned out to be 40 miles away, and it transpired that they would take my car back there, with me, and after the clean, send me home! All in all, probably about midnight! (I am 71) Then the truck rang to say he was involved in a jam and didn't expect to reach me until about 2030-ish, at which i gave up and took a taxi home.
Had I known just how bad the service would be, I could have used the local garage (1/4 mile away, and half the price) but by the time I realised it was closed. However, one quick call this morning and it will be removed and dealt with.
Endless apologetic phonecalls and bribes offered--too late- I have learned the hard way NOT TO TRUST THE RAC. I see from posts that I am not alone. What would have happened if I was on a lonely road by myself--I was very lucky in getting to my friend's--so much for policy on looking after women drivers etc. It turns out that there is only one drain-capable van and it is off the road as the driver is on holiday!
