failure to notify DVLA of sale of car. Help!

Hi all
Having a nightmare with an old car that I sold privately at the end of April. I signed the forms but didn't realise I had to take my part of it, and stupidly trusted the seller to send it on. I have since received a fine from the DVLA and have been informed that I owe the remainder of the tax, as I cancelled it the day I sold the car. I have also received a parking fine for the vehicle as the owner hasn't sent on the log book. I phoned the DVLA as soon as I received the letter and have since phoned them 3 times and sent off statements twice. Each time ive phoned them i've been told something slightly different. The last letter I got from them said "while you have now advised that you are no longer the keeper of the vehicle.....etc etc" so what does this mean??? Also I checked online on the MID and the car is uninsured so im scared of what other charges could be lurking. I feel horribly horribly powerless. I don't own the vehicle and while I stupidly didn't take my part of the document I feel like i'm being treated like a criminal. How far can they take this? what can I do?? this is really ruining my summer I can just see what little money I have being sucked away
