I have a 1999 Peugeot 206 1.9D, chosen for my children to learn to drive on and for its simplicity - not much to go wrong.
The speedometer is intermittent in a binary fashion. It either works for a whole trip from startup, or it does not work at all. It does not stop or start working partly through a journey, or flicker about as one might expect if it were a poor connection or wiring fault. It appears accurate and steady when it is working, so the stepper motor in the speedometer is presumably OK. We have replaced the speed sensor to no effect. Stopping and restarting the car rarely clears the fault, but it does work on probably 80% of journeys. There are no other known faults.
Any ideas of why we get this all binary behaviour, and how to fix it?
