Is diesel a reasonable choice ?

I drive around 10,000 miles per year, rarely motorway. Once a month 150 miles across the country on dual carriageway, A roads at decent speed. Number of 30 mile trips and some short runs.
I am attracted to a Golf but wary of TSI petrols but see many 'simple' diesel turbo engines. Obviously a petrol would be cheapeer to buy and maintain, but is it a sensible compromise to buy a diesel car ? Understand its a personal choice, test drive etc but any comments on risks/advantages with diesels welcome.
We all know of diesel emissions scandal but don't think it affects actual car.
