Wonder if anybody can offer advice with this.
Car will chuck out loads of smoke (sometimes) under gentle acceleration and last year failed the mot on emissions. The egr valve was was mechanically sticking ie wasn't dirty but was sticking at about mid point (it has four or five positions). Stripping and rebuilding made it work again and the car passed.
I would like to know if the egr valve operation can be tested on the car using a diagnostic tool to see if this is my problem again. Is it the accepted thing to take it to a specialist to pay for a diagnosis then take the car away to do my own repairs?
The Haynes manual mentions that the egr needs to be recalibrated using Ford diagnostics if it's replaced, however my car when switched off will chirp quite loudly several times from somewhere at the rear of the engine. I wonder if this is the ecu resetting the egr valve to it's closed position, something that was introduced after the Haynes manual was printed? If so the I expect the Haynes advice may not be relevant to my car.
Be grateful if anybody can offer advice.
