My partner's elderly parents have two cars and her dad's was insured with Admiral. The renewal was due in February this year but they never received a reminder or any letters from Admiral so assumed Admiral had renewed automatically after sevral years with them. So they forgot about insuring this car until the MOT was due, 2 months later, when they then realised the insurance had expired. So they were uninsured for 2 months. They panicked and immediately got insurance through Aviva and hoped that was the end of it. It seems not.
On Saturday they received an insurance reminder renewal letter from Admiral for next year! The letter was the usual one that says 'you do not have to do anything we'll take the money on such and such a date etc". Her mother immediately phoned them and told them not to take any money as they were insured with another company until April 2016. The hard sales began and the salesman confused her into admitting they had not been insured for 2 months. She said that as Admiral had not sent reminders they had gone elsewhere. She told him not to take any money and that she would contact the bank on Monday (today) to stop any transaction.
This upset the salesman who then told her in no uncertain terms he would be telling DVLA that she did not SORN the vehicle as it had no insurance. Bearing in mind she is elderly and easily confused she did not understand SORN but became very worried. In essence it came down to either you pay for your insurance through Admiral or I'll report you.
She called my partner, terrified the police or DVLA would be calling, as she was in a real panic now. She has an eye condition that is made worse with stress and blood pressure which makes her eyesight deteriorate badly. Following the call she was unable to read the letter.
So, this is a warning to anyone thinking of using Admiral either now or at renewal time. They are the lowest of the low.
