On Friday I was involved in an accident with another driver. I was travelling at the speed limit in a 30mph zone, and the driver behind me was, I thought, very close behind me. I realised the left turn I wanted was close so braked amd indicated, and took my turning. As I was going round the corner, the driver behind collided with me, his front left with my rear right. He was still in the road I exited so was a little way from me, when he came over to me he said the accident was my fault as I had braked suddenly and didn't indicate; I showed him that my indicator was on and he accused me of putting it on after the accident. Another vehicle had pulled up (driver and passenger) and I thought they were just witnesses, but as they all started to gang up on me and help the other driver with his details (he didn't know all his address details or his phone number), I realised they were friends.
In my panic and because I was becoming quite intimidated, I forgot to take the registration of the other driver, so when I spoke to my insurance I decided not to take it further as the damage wasn't too bad and nobody was hurt. Last night my partner received a phone call at home from the son of the other driver (I'd passed over my number). At first we thought they were just wanting to tie up the loose end of the registration details and were saying that the other driver knew he was at fault and was going to sort it out himself. It soon came across that they were looking for money from us, and when my partner said we had been in touch with my insurance the call became quite nasty. The son started saying I had clearly caused an accident deliberately (I've only had my car a few months and had already told my insurance I wasn't hurt so have nothing to gain from that), that the witnesses were independent and would say I was driving dangerously, and ended by saying they were going to take me to court.
I'm really scared by all this. I know I wasn't at fault but it's becoming apparent that the other parties are not afraid of bending the truth to try and put the blame on me. They were asking why my home address wasn't on Google Maps (it's a new build) so I'm worried as to why they were looking for directions to my house. I'm scared to answer the phone in case it's them again. I have told my insurance company all this new information but I'm really shaken up and don't know what to do next.
Sorry for rambling on - if anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful.
