About 40 years ago, when I lived in Rugby, it was a bank holiday weekend. One half of our family had gone to Blackpool for the weekend, in a Ford Prefect as I remember it. At about 10.00pm in the evening we got a phone call to say that the car had broken down near Stone (Staffs) and could we go to rescue them by possibly towing them back to Rugby. This was in the days before the M6 connected to the M1.

Anyway, eventually we found the pub car park with the Ford Prefect in it. Hitched up the tow rope and set off back towards Rugby. We hadn't got very far when we noticed other vehicles on a "parallel" road to us hooting and flashing their lights.

It turned out that the pub and its car park was in the central reservation of what had subsequently been built as a dual carriageway. And because we had arrived at night (and tired probably) we had set off driving the wrong way on the dual carriageway.
