Dodgy insurance?

I was involved in a car accident 5 months ago. I've accepted responsibility and have had initial contact with my insurance company. I gave a statement and they sent out an engineer to assess the damage to my car. The engineer had a sly word with me and told me that my insurance company will more than likely write my car off. The engineer said he would ring me later that night and let me know if it will be written off so I could then decide whether or not to claim for my damage (which I have not done). The engineer stated that he should not be doing this and I should keep this to my self. The engineer never rang me back that night and I haven't heard anything from my insurers since. I had a £3000 all sections excess (nobody explained what 'all sections' meant at the time I brought the insurance). As it stands nobody has informed me that I owe any money. My insurance expired just after the crash, I lost my job around the same time and have no money to pay what ever costs I owe. I'm wondering if I'm legally obliged to chase this up? As I said I've had no phone calls, no messages on the answer phone and received no letters for the last 3 months. I would check my insurance policy...but I've never even received any documents! The insurance company I'm with is an Irish company and not cleared to trade in England. I had to buy the insurance through a broker. Any ideas?
