Grounds to complain about failed driving test?

Basically I want a bit of advice from a neutral and all those close to me believe I've basically been conned out of my money. I'm on quite a near deadline to pass my test (before I go back to university) and I pretty much had to pass it first time due to the next earliest date available is 25th September (too late).
I finished the test with quite a satisfactory drive, 6 minors and 1 major although that major was what I believe to be a pretty pathetic excuse for undue hesitation. I was at a roundabout of which the junction at 3 o'clock has two lanes that can come around and also one at 12 o'clock. I was being cautious and was waiting for a clear enough opportunity to go at which as soon as I was about to take off, even pressed the handbrake, he said "Ok, I think you can go now". We arrived back at the test centre and he said I failed for this because he was "taking control of the test" despite me already starting moving and because I "didn't take two or three half chances to go". I explained to him that I didn't feel like I could go at those times and that I wasn't taught by my instructor to take half chances, something I'd probably fail for if I took them anyway. He also said he expected me to judge the speed of the cars coming from 12 o'clock, and if they were going really fast it means I should have gone as they were going straight ahead.. All he did was shrug his shoulder and say "well" when I said I was already starting to move. My mother had this similar experience on her test 20 years ago, but she got a minor for it and the examiner said "you could have gone but that will come with experience".

Does anybody feel that I have a leg to stand on if I was to take it up with the DVLA?
