I feel almost ashamed having to ask this question ... but I don't profess to know.
Is it safe and reliable to use silicone sealant to keep disc brake pads in position, in order to stop them clanking?
I didn't do it! I purchased a 4 year old Ford C-Max from a reputable UK-wide used car retailer.
Within the 3-month warrantee period a clanking sound developed from the rear offside.
The retailer took the car into their service centre and appeared to fix it.
A month on and the sound reappeared, worse.
The retailer took the car in again. On collection, I queried the fix and was told about the sealant. My initial reaction is that brakes get hot and and it would be burned off, so I asked if it was heat resistant and was told it was.
It was the end of a long day so I went home, but have since entered into discussions with the service centre about the safety and reliability of this measure. They would not comment on the technicalities without seeing the car, but have agreed to take it in again. I feel they want to dispose of the evidence of malpractice. Then again, I could be wrong, perhaps this is a valid approach?? (surely not?).
If you've got this far and will reply (thank you) do you think I should get this independently checked before the retailer destroy the evidence, and if so where best to take it?
Yours truly,
Matthew
